CINNAMON
Botanical name: Cinnamomum verum
Plant Family: Lauraceae / Laurel Family
Part Used: inner bark
Key Traits: hot, sweet & pungent
About the Herb:
One of the most warming herbs found in nature, True Cinnamon is a botanical wonder. Most of the Cinnamon available in the US is of the Cassia variety, a spicier, more pungent counterpart to the 'verum' genus. True Cinnamon, also known as Ceylon Cinnamon, is sweeter, richer and deeper, flowing deeply within our body and supporting the 'yang' ~ our vital, active, expansive energy.
In traditional Chinese medicine, Cinnamon is considered one of the most warming herbs of all. The bark has a special affinity for supporting and providing strength to the back and torso, while Cinnamon twigs improve circulation to the limbs. Through its warming & circulating properties Cinnamon helps to dispel deep coldness within the body and relieve pain. It is also known to tonify the Ming Men or ‘Life Gate,' an energetic fire housed within the kidneys that supports our vitality and longevity.
Topically, Cinnamon should be used with caution. When the whole bark is infused into oil, it helps bring warmth and encourage blood flow to the area.
