We source ingredients as locally as possible, to both strengthen our island resiliency and to minimize our carbon footprint. With over 90% of Hawaii's food being imported, we aim to support our agricultural community by providing farmers & growers with additional revenue streams for abundant, underutilized & seasonal crops. We always strive to design our formulations around what is available locally.
Due to the delicate nature of Hawaii's ecosystems, we do not wildcraft any of our ingredients. We do, however, source several medicinal & aromatic botanicals from the herbalist's organically-tended garden in Mānoa.
We have the highest possible standards when it comes to our ingredients. While we prioritize locally grown, any ingredients from off-island come from the most reputable herbal suppliers in the world. We always opt for Organic whenever available.
We make sure to purchase Fair Trade for ingredients that often have vulnerable supply chains; specifically, Shea Butter, Cacao Butter and African Black Soap.
We never, ever use fragrances, fillers, preservatives, or synthetic extracts and chemicals of any kind. Our formulations incorporate natural botanicals in their purest form to preserve their potent, healing vibrancy.
All of our containers are consciously chosen to leave the smallest possible footprint. We serve elixirs in recyclable glass bottles & jars, metal tins (check with your local recycling center to see if tins can be recycled in your area), and compostable paper tubes (which can be added to your home compost).
Even though product boxes look pretty, we choose not to box individual products to avoid the excess waste.
KRAFT LABELS & CARDS
Our product labels & cards are printed on fully recycled Kraft paper, with the intention that they won't last forever ~ just like our products.
We love the earthy look & feel of recycled Kraft, as well as the fact that they become weathered with use and are removable so your vessels can easily be repurposed. We also print labels in small batches, so that our formulations remain flexible as the seasons & ingredient availability change.
All of our shipping materials are selected to minimize waste. We use fully recycled mailers & recyclable boxes to deliver your elixirs. Our upcycled perforated cardboard packing comes from O'ahu-based Perfs Packing, who collects local carboard waste destined for the recycling bin and turns it into packing material. Kraft paper and repurposed thermal wrapping may also find their way into your order, and we use rubber backed Kraft packing tape to seal boxes.
We are a bit obsessed with finding creative solutions to reducing waste. All leftover plant material from our formulations is composted in our garden, and most of the packing material we receive is then used for customer & wholesale orders. We endlessly repurpose, upcycle & recycle with the goal of being a zero waste business!
We are fortunate to run Indigo Elixirs in a solar powered production & fulfillment space. We utilize traditional methods of preparation that take time and rely on the steady and loving hands of our small team.
