JASMINE
Coveted across centuries for her intoxicating redolence and even inspiring the scent-forward fiction found in Tom Robbins' Jitterbug Perfume, Jasmine is one nature's most bewitching aromatics.
There are two types of Jasmine beloved in perfumery: Jasminum sambac, known here in Hawai'i as Pikake & elsewhere as Arabian Jasmine, with an enrapturing heady floral, almost fruity fragrance.
Then there's Jasminum grandiflorum or Royal Jasmine, whom perfumers refer to as the King of Flowers: a star-shaped white bloom, but with a distinctively more earthy, grounded aroma.
Individually they are alluring, but together they are exquisite ~ the type of duo that is an aromatic allusion to 'dui yao' or plant pair in Chinese herbalism. This combination is so lovely that I've dedicated two elixirs to it: Moon All Over Oil & Jungle Jasmine Perfume Oil.
The sad truth about most Jasmine fragrance oils is that they are merely approximations, synthesized largely from petroleum in a lab. I've yet to smell a fabricated Jasmine that even begins to compete with the scented perfection of millions of years of evolution.
This is why I always and only work with real botanical aromatics. Both types of Jasmine we use are produced by supercritical CO2 extraction, a modern method that employs pressurized carbon dioxide to pull aroma molecules out of plant material. The resulting solvent-free Pikake & Jasmine extracts are incredibly complex and display an ethereal blue florescence in the right light, as seen above.
These rich aromas serve as the stars for Moon All Over Oil, along with precious Royal Hawaiian Sandalwood oil. We used this trio as the foundation for Jungle Jasmine, but layered in spicy & fruity notes of Cardamom, Sweet Orange, Clove & local whole Vanilla.
